startrunning are proud to bring you their third event, and second major exhibition to date. All of the works featured have been carefully selected due to their concentration on themes of repetitive movement, monotony and subtle relationships between objects and threads of importance from everyday activity...

Brown Sierra

...also known as Pia Gambardella and Paddy Collins are a London based Arts group. Their Interior installation and performance for startrunning is a new work that deals with the material of the building and the variety of acoustic properties that act as a filter for sound that pass through them. Together they will use the large loading bay doors in the space as a sounding board for the amplification of a variety of springs stretched and attached to them. For the installation the springs are repeatedly struck using small electric motors. Brown Sierra will also perform with the doors using motors and bows to activate the springs that will sometimes rest together harmoniously and sometimes create friction.

Chris Drury

…is a Manchester based artist whose diverse yet distinctive artwork has taken a turn from his high-end image-making role in Fingathing. For this newly created video installation, Drury has been exploring the more lo-fi styles of animation in order to reveal the repetitive patterns that reflect the mood of everyday routines and relationships between humans and the same space they inhabit.

Naomi Kashiwagi & Black Lodge

…are Manchester based Artists who have collaborated for startrunning to perform a unique sound installation using wind-up gramophones to play 78rpm shellac records. The records themselves have been physically altered by Black Lodge whose artistic practice is piled high with electronic innards. Kashiwagi is an artist who transforms the utilitarian and conceptual functions of everyday technologies and phenomena. She also challenges the inter-relationships and boundaries between art, music and language. When collaborating they rejoice in the pop and crackle of all that is dusty and obsolete, the long dead snarl of Italian singers, the field hollers of blind and Black America to coax new sounds from old machines that help the shellac tell its own story. With no batteries required the small gestures and ritualized movements they deliver embodies the uneasy relationship between the old and the new placing the viewer in the role of intruder and voyeur.
