startrunning are proud to bring you their fifth event, and third major exhibition. With ever-increasing modes of communication at our disposal, it is no longer simply a case of what we want to say; now more than ever, the method chosen can be just as important as the messages contained within. With this in mind, the artists featured this evening place a great deal of significance on the way in which an idea, message, object or act is transmitted from artist to viewer.
Alice Bradshaw
…is a member of Contents May Vary, the Manchester based artist collective. For startrunning, Bradshaw intends to create a sense of curiosity through the manipulation of mundane objects and materials. Mass-produced, anonymous objects are often rendered dysfunctional caricatures of themselves. By using animation and limited edition objects to blur distinctions between the absurd and the mundane, the artist is creating or accentuating subtleties, whilst addressing concepts of purpose and futility. Bradshaw holds the belief that the environment in which a work exists becomes integral to the work itself. Consequently, the work made has become site-responsive, exploring ideas of locality and displacement.
Liz Murphy
…is a member of Contents May Vary, the artists collective based in Manchester. Murphy has initiated a series of physical scenarios to happen throughout the duration of the event. This work forces viewers to witness frequent experiences that may be unsettling, yet playful. Don't be scared.
RandomNumber
…also known as Matthew Robson is an artist who lives and produces work in Leeds. The randomNumber project is a means within which, as a non-musician, he can realise musical ideas and transfer them into the digital realm. For startrunning a set of tricks and tropes of the electronics toolshed, for which there seems to be an endless appetite, will be offered up creating an atmosphere you can almost reach out and bite. The clever take on the details and dynamics of electronic motion are representative of how randomNumber balances its references and revisions.
Richard Shields
…is a member of the Manchester based artist collective Contents May Vary. This new uninhibited work for startrunning enables him to focus on expressions and different approaches to mark making in a uniquely animated manner. Screen Play will consist of a performance playing on the literal and physical. The objects sourced and area used in the piece will be tied together through a performed pre existing narrative.
Simon Blackmore
…is a Manchester based artist that will introduce a brand new instrument called Sticks. Reducing a computer interface to 1s and 0s or more accurately sound and silence, sticks explore time, rhythm and live algorithmic composition.
As consumers of technology we are faced with increasingly elaborate ways of sorting through the vast quantities of music and images that are stored on our hard disks. Current trends, exemplified by Apple's iPhone, combine familiar visual systems such as libraries and shelves with elegantly designed innovative interfaces such as scroll wheels and touch screens. The Owl Project have been exploring the question, 'What would happen if we simply learnt to speak the same language as computers ?' This is not as far fetched as it seems, as there are many surprising similarities between rhythm and binary information. Simon will present some of the ideas behind sticks and demonstrate how they can be used to navigate through a music library and even remix it.
Tom Watson
…is an artist based in Manchester. For this newly made provident work for startrunning, Watson will select 3 items of ephemera which happen to be in the Sandbar at the start of the event. These items will then be ready to enter into a public collection. The means of display, advertising and maintenance of this public collection will be determined by the amount raised by the end of an auction, to be held on the same night in the Sandbar..
..However access to the collection will not be determined this way, it will remain fully publicly accessible no matter how much is raised.
