startrunning are pleased to present their seventh event and fourth and final major exhibition of 2008. All of the artists have been drawn together because of the various ways that they explore and question ideas and techniques of physical comfort, alongside relationships between visual and aural, factual and fictitious experiences. The works featured and performed address aspects of chance and imagination that form novel encounters through their materiality and simplicity.
Gary Fisher
…is a Salford Based artist whose continuous process of experimentation and enquiry focused around instinctive or investigatory responses to objects, sounds and images is continued at startrunning. For his sitespecific performance Twelve Bars, Fisher will adopt a manual approach to conceiving sound from a material source within the existing space providing bittersweet new compositions. The documentary and actuality of the newly made 'Listening and Typing: startrunning/sandbar' work encourages under- standings of the balance of processes through recording, structure and identity.
jack of none
…is an artist collaborative currently based in Manchester. Their practice often deals with highlighting possibilities and raising questions about truth and imagination - but first and foremost embracing the activity of searching. Essonido #1 is a fictitious arrangement that deals with the possibility of collecting stray historical fragments and signals. These 'fragments' are collected through a sculptural receiver and displayed sonically and visually. Images of the Norwegian Consulate and Amateur Radio enthusiasts are presented amongst a host of others that allude to the many previous incarnations of sandbar.
Hervé Perez
…also known as sndsukinspook is an artist/musician currently based in Sheffield. For startrunning, Perez has developed a very personal way to process and sculpt field recordings to reveal their musical features and maximise resonance with the listener and their experience of sound. His research revolves around sound as form, vibrations in relation to space and the body and phenomenology. Lurking in the dark spaces of acous-mania, sndsukinspook plays the landscape and the urban environment alike – metal bridges, church doors, wisps of water clapotis and wind pipes forging vibrations and frequencies that will shake the nerves of academia, through an architecture of sound sculpted which reveals the harmonic imprints of sacred places.
Daniel Staincliffe
…is an artist based in Manchester whose predominantly new-media based work fuses his innate fascination with the natural world and its processes. The newly created piece for startrunning is one of a series of recent works that harnesses chance as a creative process, in order to avoid total conscious control of the product. Any fleeting moment can be chosen by the viewer to trigger a series of mechanical relationships, which leads to the capture of a momentary collection of ephemera; subsequently presented for re-examination where the viewer is dissociated from the real place and pushed into an altered experience.
